What is Support Coordination?
Support Coordination is a service funded by NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme). Its aim is to assist people who are part of NDIS, and their families if needed, in managing their NDIS funds effectively. This service helps you line up different types of help and resources you may need, like community services or funded programs. The goal is to make sure you get the most benefit from your NDIS funding.
What is 'Capacity Building'?
Support Coordination uses a ‘Capacity Building’ method. In simple terms, this means a support coordinator will gradually help you learn new skills and gain confidence. The idea is to help you take more control over how you use your NDIS Plan. For instance, you’ll learn how to set things up on your own, keep an eye on your budget, or find service providers by yourself.
What does a Support Coordinator do?
A support coordinator is well-versed in the intricacies of the NDIS system. They assist NDIS participants in several ways. First, they help identify the individual’s specific needs and set personal development goals. Next, they guide participants through the various NDIS options, including mainstream and community supports, informal aids, and professional service providers, to find the best fit for their needs and objectives. They also facilitate communication with these providers, helping to maximize support hours and finalize agreements and schedules. Additionally, the coordinator empowers individuals by mentoring them in various skills, such as using the NDIS online portal, monitoring budgets, and locating service providers. Lastly, they help track progress towards achieving set goals and provide guidance before, during, and after the NDIS Plan Review process.
Difference between a Support Coordinator and a Plan Manager?
A Support Coordinator helps people in the NDIS program in several ways. They help you understand what your NDIS Plan is all about, figure out what you need and what you want to achieve, keep an eye on how you’re doing, and link you up with the right services and people so you can live the way you want to.
A Plan Manager takes care of the money and paperwork part of your NDIS Plan. They handle things like making payments, dealing with bills, and keeping track of how much money is left in your budget. If you need help with managing your plan, your Support Coordinator can set this up for you.
How can a Support Coordinator help with an NDIS Plan Review meeting?
A support coordinator assists NDIS participants before, during, and after their Plan Review meeting.
Before the meeting, they create a report that details what services are helping the participant reach their goals and make suggestions for future services. They also look into specialized services and tools as needed.
During the meeting, they help guide the participant and their family through the process.
Afterwards, they stay in touch with NDIS staff to provide any extra information needed to make sure the participant gets the best plan possible.
Can an NDIS Provider supply both Support Coordination and other NDIS supports?
Yes. NDIS Providers should have strategies in place to prevent any conflict of interest.
Does having Support Coordination reduce the funding available for other supports in my Plan?
